Meet Dr. Arwin Cotas-Girard

Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PSY31381)

Arwin Cotas-Girard

I am a licensed clinical psychologist providing child, adolescent, and adult therapy, as well as comprehensive psychological assessments across the lifespan. My work is grounded in psychodynamic and relational frameworks, and I take an integrative approach tailored to each client’s unique needs. I specialize in the evaluation of Autism Spectrum Disorder, particularly in girls and women, and bring both clinical expertise and lived experience as a neurodivergent woman to this work.

Trained in Therapeutic Assessment, I view evaluations as collaborative, brief therapeutic interventions that support healing through insight, self-discovery, and the reworking of personal narratives. I work closely with clients, their caregivers, and other key people and systems in their lives to develop a nuanced, compassionate understanding of their needs and strengths.

In therapy, I strive to create a space that is warm, playful, and respectful. With children, I often use play, art, and other creative modalities to support expression beyond words. I am certified in PC-CARE through UC Davis and enjoy working dyadically with children and caregivers through structured, supportive play. I believe therapy and assessment should be meaningful, relationship-centered experiences and not just investigative processes.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked in a variety of settings including nonprofits, in-home services, public schools, private practice, hospital systems, and military bases. My interest in working with children began early, as the go-to babysitter in my neighborhood, and continued after graduating magna cum laude from San Francisco State University. My first post-college job was as an Applied Behavioral Analysis therapist working with children on the Autism Spectrum, spending multiple hours a day with clients and their families in their homes, schools, and communities. Due to the rewarding nature of this work, I was inspired to pursue a doctoral degree in Psychology from the Wright Institute with my training strongly focused on comprehensive assessments.

As a first-generation immigrant, I am deeply committed to providing culturally attuned services to underserved communities. My published research includes work on Filipino American identity assessment, and I am a strong advocate for gender-affirming care and support for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

In addition to my private practice, I serve on the Board of Directors for the Collaborative Assessment Association of the Bay Area. I am currently Head of Clinical at Kismet Health, where I help design a pediatric telehealth platform built by providers, for providers. I also enjoy training the next generation of clinicians as adjunct faculty and assessment supervisor at the Wright Institute.

When I’m not working, I love reading, hiking, eating good food, seeing musicals, traveling, and going on adventures— big and small—with my dogs, family, and friends.

Beginning therapy or an evaluation can feel like a big step, and I understand how vulnerable it can be to seek support. I aim to spark curiosity and offer clarity, helping clients better understand themselves and move toward more insight, self-compassion, and good days ahead. I look forward to connecting with you on your journey.
